Teenager found dead after meeting up with online date
A tragic incident unfolded in North Carolina as a young woman’s life was cut short after meeting a man she connected with online. Joshua Newton, 25, and his live-in girlfriend, Victoria Smith, 22, have been arrested in connection with the death of 18-year-old Kierstyn Williamson. Her body was discovered miles away from Newton’s home in Monroe. The Union County Sheriff’s Office initiated an investigation into Williamson’s disappearance after her family reported her missing. Newton is facing charges of first-degree murder and obstruction of justice, while Smith faces a similar obstruction of justice charge as well as accessory after the fact.
Joshua Newton and Victoria Smith were taken into custody following the discovery of Kierstyn Williamson’s body. The 18-year-old had been reported missing by her family in Laurens, South Carolina, after they had not heard from her since June 30th. The Union County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into her disappearance, which led them to Newton’s residence.
Authorities revealed that Newton and Williamson had met online approximately a month before the incident. Newton allegedly picked up Williamson from the restaurant where she worked in Laurens and drove her to his home in Monroe, where it is believed she was killed. The cause of death is yet to be determined while authorities wait for the results of the autopsy.
Family members were aware that Williamson was leaving with Newton, as they believed it was a dating relationship. Tragically, what was supposed to be a date ended in her untimely death. Investigators also allege that Smith assisted in moving the body.
Kierstyn Williamson’s mother, Brittney Shealy, expressed her devastation over the loss of her firstborn. Friends of Williamson revealed that she was transitioning to male and had started going by the name Jacob. Promise Edwards, a family friend, mentioned that Jacob had found peace in the last month and a half, after enduring a lifetime of cruelty from the world.
While there is currently no evidence to suggest that this case is a hate crime, authorities are continuing their investigation.
